iris

here's a random scan from my sketchbook. been digging on Iris's lately. i have been drawing again with a fountain pen i've had for some time now. its a Namiki fountain pen with a flexible medium point. i personally like finer points so i've been using the nib upside down while drawing. it works for me.....

decided to approach this 12x12 a little different. i laid down a wash of Cadmium and worked on top while letting it show through in some areas. This is a very common technique but don't use it in my process much. figured i would give it a try. its been fun so far. i does look a bit weird at this stage eh?

12x12

another 12x12. i saw this root in a botanical illustration book that was red and used it as a departure for this piece.

the root of...

here's a 12x12 i started this evening. my intention was to make foliage grow out of a root. it's more like a branch with roots. i'm having fun though.

Daurian Redstart

here's a Daurian Redstart i added over the weekend. they're common birds native in Eastern Asia. i found out about them during my research recently and wanted to add one to a painting so i figured this was a great opportunity to do so. they're not as bright orange in real life but in my world they are. this piece is one of eight total that will be in a show at Catherine Kelleghan Gallery in Atlanta in July.
