studio pics

burly ball of foliage

two jackdaws

some more finished and in progress works in the studio at the moment. the only one finished is the small mockingbird on a 10x10 panel. its going to be in a show at Breeze Block Gallery in Portland, OR in September. I hear they're going to make a book of the show too. Rad! the other two pieces are 36x36 in progress. back to work! (you'd think with all this work I would be able to make a living out of this stuff, hahaha)

new and gouache

new 36x36 i started on thursday. i cut out some watercolor studies i did in a sketchbook that i had while living in NY. funny how they didn't seem to have as much impact on me at the time as they do now. i'm using these as departures for some new pieces. i seem to go back and fourth with mark making that describes a leaf or flower versus just painting a flat out leaf or flower. i'm a fan of the former. it think its more interesting and sometimes more effective when you can imply or describe in a few paint strokes while leaving room to explore and keep coming back to find new things. i pulled out some gouache last night and continued where i left off with the watercolor studies. there's lots of room for exploration with these. or if anything, they're fun to do and i'll just end up with a pile of them on a shelf.

update accompanied by many bad phone pics

some shots of the studio and some pieces going on at the moment. i recently cleared out a work table i had in the studio in order to make room for wall space so i can paint some larger pieces. i'm excited to have two work areas now! the houseplant is 36x48 (its not that large i know, but larger pieces will be rocked) and the cluster of warblers is 18x24. how has your week been?
